BACKUP CAMERA INSTALLATION

Although backup cameras are a recent vehicle addition, the concept originated in the 1950’s. At a car show, General Motors featured a Buick Centurion that used televisions mounted in the rear and on the dashboard to assist motorist with backing up in the similar way that modern day backup cameras work. Toyota then incorporated this similar technology in one of its model vehicles – the Soarer – but this vehicle primarily was available in Japanese markets, not in the United States. In the early 2000’s, Nissan introduced the technology once again in its luxury vehicles and from there; a new innovation was finally accepted and universally applied by many other car manufacturers.

Today, there are many new vehicles in which this technology comes standard but this technology is also becoming an option for older model vehicles that don’t have this technology installed. As with most added features, you should take precautions because some vehicle additions can void vehicle warranties. This is why it is always best to have a professional to install add-ons. Typically, the technician will mount the camera on the rear license plate bracket. Sometimes wiring can be run through the pre-existing holes but additional holes may need to be drilled into the area near the license plate in order to mount the backup camera. A signal wire is then run through the trunk which plugs into a transmitter. The other camera is then mounted on the dashboard. Once everything is configured, the cameras are then checked to ensure that they are working properly.

Backup cameras have become more affordable as competing technology has come out. Factor in installation fees and these costs may be a little higher. The process could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the complexity of the camera and pieces used in the installation process. Some of the top name brands for cameras include TadiBrothers, Yada, Boyo, QuickVu, and Pyle just to name a few.
